Soccer, American Style

The Miami FC Blues have moved up to fifth place in the United Soccer League standings, thanks mostly to some stellar defensive play, which helped the team ride an impressive five-game shutout streak in June. And although they won only one game during that run, they collected some much-needed points. Meanwhile, striker Alex Afonso continued to treat opposing teams’ goalkeepers as if they were Ned Beatty in Deliverance, racking up a league-leading seven goals. The streak ended at the hands of the first-place Vancouver Whitecaps, but the Blues still finished the game with a 1-1 draw, keeping Miami undefeated during that stretch. And the Blues held the Whitecaps to just one goal even though most of Miami’s stars were riding the bench. Not too shabby.

Friday night the Blues will once again look to display their stifling defense. And although we would prefer to see our team play against an international foe on Independence Day — like Vancouver or Montreal (that’s right, Canada, we’re not through with you yet) — this game is against the last-place Puerto Rico Islanders, so it should at least be an easy win.
