Just the kind of casual yet creative restaurant every neighborhood wants — and the Upper Eastside desperately needs. This stylish little spot has a split personality that keeps its co-owners, a Cuban-American and a Spaniard, happy. At lunchtime, the fare is Latin soul food of mostly Cuban origin with multicultural touches. During dinner service, the space morphs into a Spanish tapas bar with limited entrées but an astonishingly large selection of moderately priced small plates. Service can be slow, but it is unfailingly friendly. Although the kitchen runs out of certain dishes too often, there are other items you can not afford to miss: impossibly creamy house croquetas; grilled asparagus with aioli dipping sauce; richly flavorful chicken soup; and the complimentary Brazilian cheese bread that is served day and night.
